On April 8, 2025 — International Romani Day — OKKO released Matterica's documentary stand-up series Being Gypsy. Five episodes. Stand-up comedian Leonid Kulakov rents a motorhome and travels to meet Romani communities — to gather material for his act and talk about the life of a nomadic people without clichés.
About the series
Being Gypsy is a hybrid of documentary filmmaking and stand-up comedy. Kulakov spends time with a range of people from the Romani community; among the subjects are a baron, a businessman, and a music producer. Directed by Vladislav Kuznetsov, written by Alexey Kobylkov, cinematography by Mikhail Loshkarev (Mishembo). Produced by Mikhail Borodin, Anastasia Evtushenko, Anton Korablev, Vladimir Todorov, and Ksenia Gofman.
Early reactions
On April 13, 2025, Russian publicist Sergey Minaev wrote in his Telegram channel: "I'm watching a great doc about Romani people. Stand-up comedian Lenya Kulakov and his crew filmed a range of people — a baron, a regular businessman, a music producer. Good film." (source)
